The Missing £1

Three old ladies decide to buy a television!

They each put £10 towards the cost, which makes £30.

The TV man decides to give the sweet old ladies £5 back as discount and asks the delivery boy to give them the £5 when he delivers the television.

The delivery boy thinks, ‘I’m not doing this for nothing’, and takes £2 for himself and gives the ladies back £1 each so they each pay £9 instead of £10.

3 x 9 = 27 plus the £2 that the boy keeps for himself = £29, so where has the missing £1 gone?

Work it out for yourself

How smart is Your Right Foot?

Try this foot, hand co-ordination game.

You will want to keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!

1 Sitting on a chair, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2 Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with you right hand.

Your foot will change direction.

Get your friends to try this. It’s fun even if it is frustrating. If you find you CAN do it, please come and show me!

Brain Gym Activity

Look at the above line of kisses.

Starting from the left or right, without following the line with a finger (this is cheating), try and count them.

See how far you can get before the kisses turn into diamonds in front of your very eyes. You can NOT count how many there are in the first attempt.

Test for Fun

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately. OK?

Let's find out just how clever you really are.

First Question:

You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!

Second Question:

If you overtake the last person, then you are...?

Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person?

Third Question:

Very tricky maths! Note: This must be done in your head only.
Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000

Add 40 to it.

Now add another 1000.

Now add 30.

Add another 1000.

Now add 20.

Now add another 1000

Now add 10.

What is the total?

Did you get 5000?
Today is definitely not your day.

The correct answer is actually 4100.

Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! Maybe you will get the last question right?

Fourth Question:

Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono.

What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Answer: Nunu?

NO! Of course not.
Her name is Mary. Read the question again!

Okay, now the bonus round:

There is a mute person who wants to buy a toothbrush.

By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?

He just has to open his mouth and ask, so simple!

Mirror Image Guided Draw

Materials needed:

Plain piece of A4 paper
A pen
A small mirror
A blank piece of paper or card.
Lots of patience ? ha ha!

Get a piece of paper and draw a parrallellagram or a rectangle. Next draw a smaller one inside of the one you have drawn so the two shapes allow you to draw in-between the two lines.

Place the mirror above the drawing so when you look in the mirror, you can see the drawing (Important… do not look at the drawing itself. It must be looked at only through the mirror).

Using your pen, and without taking your pen off the paper try to draw 4 straight lines in-between the two lines staying well within the perimeter of the shape until you are back where you started.

You will most likely find that you end up drawing scribbles or going out of the lines. It is very hard indeed! This is because the image is reversed through the mirror and your brain does not realise this.

Now… draw the shape again but this time before you start… imagine joining the shape up and talking yourself through it as you are saying it:-
Across from left to right – Down – Backwards – Up

Were you able to complete a straight line this time?

Colourful Language

Try and say the colour of the word and not read the word itself.

(This is taken from the Stroop Effect Test).

It causes difficulty for some because the two sides of the brain are in conflict with each other trying to read the word and say the colour.

Thinking Outside Your Box

Imagine you are driving along in a sports car on a wild, stormy night, it's raining heavily, when suddenly you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for a bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.

2. An old friend who once saved your life.

3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

What would you do, knowing very well that there can only be one passenger in your car?

You could pick up the old lady, because otherwise she is going to die, and thus you should save her first;

Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect hence to pay him back.

However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.
